Passing the ECT Board Examination

Electronics Technicians (ECT) Board Examination is easy to take and to pass but many got the rating of Failed! How can it be? Let me tell you some perceptions about it.

Along with the ECT Review materials that I’ve shared through my previous blog, this one is to encourage everybody who are about to take the PRC’s ECT Board Examination.  This would be the first step to have a legitimate license. Most of the time, fellow ECE students who are finished at least their 3rd Year in College required by their school to take ECT Exam for them to be able to continue their major in ECE. Other related courses to Electronics such as BS Electrical Engineering, BS Computer Engineering, BS IT Major in Electronics, a graduate of vocational course in electronics of not less than 2 years and even an ECE Graduate who are not yet ready to take their ECE Licensure Examination or they will took both the Examination (ECT and ECE) exams, it is a big opportunity because the schedule of the examination is not the same. Alternately, ECT or ECE may come first on the assigned dates. They try to take ECT Board Examination for eligibility and to have an additional credential or valid ID. It is really good to have an achievement though someone can have a job in Manufacturing Companies for the position of Technician even if he/she has no license. But it can give you a big chance to be a priority in applying for a job if you have an achievement like having a license.

I will no longer prolong my ideas, for those who want to take ECT Examinations; I will give you some insights about the actual ECT Board Examination.

Only one subject is given and entitled as “Technical Subjects and Laws and Ethics”.

See the Link of the ECE/ECT Exam Syllabus for September 2014 including the General Instructions.

ECE/ECT Exam Sylabus (September 2014)

The exam is composed of 50 items. All the subjects including Basic Mathematics, Electronics and expect to have a little Electronics Systems and Technology, Technical Questions about Electronic Concepts and Electronics Engineering Laws of 2004 (RA 9292).

You are given 4 hours to answer the 50 item questions so there is no time pressure. You can think and review your answers many times.

Even if the questions are only 50 items. PRC have a distribution of points in every question depending on the weight of the questions. As many takers are suspicious about how PRC can rate their exams, and make it a total of 100%, many fails having the grade of only 69 while the passing grade is 70. It is not a x2 of each and every question, if that so, how come to have a 69 or 71 grade? It can be 68 or 70 or in even number form.

Well, by the way, to be direct in the topic of how to pass the ECT Board Examination, I will give just simple steps and the technique is depending on you.

1.       Always Pray and make yourself relaxed
2.       Read and understand by heart your Review Materials
3.       Search related topics about Electronics and its concept
4.       Don’t worry about Math. Only Basic Mathematics is given in this kind of exam
5.       Read and Understand RA 9292 specially the title and contents of each and every sections in the ECE Laws
6.       For practical questions, use your common sense.

Good Luck and God bless to all the Takers of ECT Examination!

      * magRegister ka muna online
      http://prc.gov.ph/online/application/apply.aspx

      * bring 2 passport size na picture na may name mo

      * punta ka sa prc

      * buy ka nang documentary stamp. Meron sa loob ng PRC

      * magtanong sa guard kung saang window ang registration ng ECT

      * present mo lang ung documents mo: TOR or ung NCII

      * bigay mo passport size picture mo

(may step-by-step procedures din kung pano magregister sa loob mismo nang prc)

      * maghanda ka nang Examination Fee na Php 600.00

      good luck! =D

  8. Hi!

I am an HR Specialist in a Semi Conductor company and I would like to do a reality check on the likelihood of any tech graduates taking the ECT board exam.

Is it usual for tech courses graduates to pursue an ECT license or not many students choose to do so?

Are there schools who require, or if not, encourage students to take ECT right after graduation?

Are schools' tech courses' curriculum aligned towards pushing a student to take ect board exam?

Is it included in the list of primary qualifications for tech related jobs?

Hopefully someone can give me an answer.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi! Most of the students who take the ECT Board Exam are candidates for graduating in BSECE - in preparation to the ECE Board Exam as well; or graduates of BSEE or BSCpE.
To take or not to take is the decision of the student. I know some who would opt NOT TO, because they are already well off - they just want to have a degree.
Others recognize the need for the license so it may pave more opportunities, as well as to be a "fully-pledged" technician or/and engineer - in the near future.
Regarding if schools encourage their students: Most (if not all) schools do recommend taking the board exam (ECT and ECE). On our curriculum, we are required to pass the integration/correlation courses which are review subjects and have a mock board final examination in the end.
      Hope this helps.
